Ambassador Seijoong Kwon hosted a farewell dinner at his residence on June 13 (Sat) with Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Sean Sobers, during which they discussed bilateral issues and ways to further strengthen relations between the Republic of Korea and Trinidad and Tobago.
Minister Sobers remarked that, due to his busy diplomatic and parliamentary schedule, he had only managed to find time over the weekend, and expressed his pleasure that they were able to hold the dinner before Ambassador Kwon's departure. He also conveyed his hope that the bilateral relationship, which marked its 40th anniversary last year, would continue to deepen and expand across various sectors.
Ambassador Kwon noted that the Government of the Republic of Korea had sent a congratulatory letter from the Minister of Foreign Affairs regarding Trinidad and Tobago's election to the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term. He encouraged Trinidad and Tobago, as an incoming Security Council member, to play an active role in promoting peace and stability not only in the Middle East but also in Northeast Asia.
Minister Sobers expressed appreciation for the congratulatory message and reaffirmed Trinidad and Tobago's commitment to contributing to international peace and security throughout the Security Council process, from agenda-setting to the adoption of resolutions.
The Minister also introduced his constituency, Tabaquite, as a region with a strong agricultural base and expressed hope that cooperation between the two countries could be further developed in areas such as agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, and the creative industries as part of Trinidad and Tobago's economic diversification efforts.
Ambassador Kwon highlighted the need for a regular policy consultation mechanism with Trinidad and Tobago, a key partner in the Caribbean region, and Minister Sobers responded positively to the proposal. Ambassador Kwon further noted that KOTRA would participate in the Trade and Investment Convention (TIC), which opens on July 9 this year, and suggested that the two countries continue expanding cooperation in trade and investment as well as in other areas of mutual interest.
